Dive into the new 2023 Virginia History and Social Science Standards of Learning (SOL) in this engaging 90-minute professional learning session. Participants will explore key changes in the standards, gain insight into the inquiry-based approach, and familiarize themselves with the new Henrico Instructional Guides. Educators will also have dedicated time to dive into their first unit, collaborate with colleagues, and begin planning for a smooth transition. By the end of the session, teachers will leave with a clear understanding of the new standards and practical strategies for implementation.

During this program you will learn how to access the Valentine archives, analyze never before seen primary sources and get the opportunity to win a free membership to the museum! Participants will come away with materials they can use in their classroom and how they can access materials to support innovative student learning.

This presentation will include samples of educational programs offered by the American Civil War Museum. Teachers will learn about opportunities to expand students' study of the Civil War with museum-curated lesson plans, field trips, classroom outreach, and virtual programs. This session will also include a closer look into how to deepen students' understanding of the Civil War and Reconstruction using key primary source documents.
Inquiry in Practice: Bringing IDMs to Life equips secondary Social Studies teachers with the tools and strategies to implement state-provided Inquiry Design Models (IDMs) in the classroom. This session focuses on practical approaches to facilitating inquiry—from launching compelling questions to guiding students through document analysis, discussion, and evidence-based writing. Participants will explore ways to adapt IDMs to fit their students’ needs, manage time effectively, and foster deeper engagement with historical thinking.
